About marine collagen
Collagen is the primary building block of the body’s skin, muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues. It makes up approximately 1/3 of the body’s mass, making it the most abundant natural structural protein in the body.
Healthy levels of collagen in the body therefore contribute to everything from joint health and the protection of the organs, to a healthy cardiovascular system, blood clotting, skin strength and elasticity. It is also found in blood vessels and intestinal lining. It essentially forms a “scaffold” that provides both structure and strength and plays a crucial role in anchoring the body’s cells together.
Fish collagen, also known as marine collagen, is a Type I collagen, which is the most abundant type in the human body and plays a crucial role in skin, bone and connective tissue health.
Source:
Fish collagen is extracted from the by-products of the fish processing industry, such as skin and scales, and sometimes bones.
Hydrolysed:
Fish collagen is often processed into smaller peptides through a process called hydrolysis, making it easier for the body to absorb and utilise. The collagen in our Marine Collagen Nourish is hydrolysed.
Bioavailability:
Fish collagen is more easily absorbed by the body compared to some other collagen types, due to its smaller particle size.
Alternatives:
Marine collagen is a good option for those who avoid bovine collagen, due to dietary restrictions or preferences, such as pescatarians.
As a beauty product
Collagen is widely recognised as an effective anti-ageing supplement, to help combat the fine lines and wrinkles that are caused when collagen levels in the skin naturally deplete with age, as well as to help slow the ageing process itself. The body loses 1.5% every year. By the age of 40, we have lost around 30% of our collagen levels.
Supplementing with high quality collagen can help to give skin a more radiant, youthful appearance, improve skin moisture and texture, elasticity and hydration.
As a muscle, sports and fitness recovery product
As mentioned above, collagen is one of the main proteins in the body which acts as natural “scaffolding” to provide strength and structure to cells. Fuelled by amino acids, it is the key component in our bodies responsible for maintaining the proteins in our muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments.
Collagen can also help with muscle repair and growth. As we age, our collagen production naturally slows down, impacting not only our physical appearance, but also the strength of our muscles, bones, joints and ligaments. Collagen can assist in promoting muscle recovery, as well as building and repairing muscles and relieving joint pain.
Hyaluronic acid (HA)
Hyaluronic acid plays an important role in the human body, including in terms of moisture retention in the skin and joint movement. It is also found in soft connective tissues (including in the gums and eyes). However, with age, the levels of HA in the body begins to decline. In fact, the skin’s HA content starts to decrease as early as 20 years old and is reduced to half by the age of 50.
The hyaluronic acid used in our Marine Collagen Nourish formula is ActiHyal – premium sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) with a very high purity level.
Methylsulfonyl Methane (MSM)
MSM is a naturally-occurring sulphur-containing compound that is beneficial for both skin and joints due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It also helps the body to make collagen and glucosamine. It can therefore help to reduce pain and inflammation associated with joint conditions (such as osteoarthritis), improve skin health and aid in muscle recovery after exercise.
Vitamins and minerals
Marine Collagen Nourish contains a range of vitamins (vitamin B3, vitamin C and biotin) and zinc, which support: collagen formation, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal energy-yielding metabolism, the normal function of the immune system, the normal functioning of the nervous system and more (see below).
The amino acids
Protein is a key component in our diet due to its role in maintaining tissue and muscle. It also contains amino acids, which are the building blocks used for muscle / tissue repair and growth. With collagen being the most abundant protein in the body, it is no surprise that increasing collagen intake helps with building and repairing muscle and supporting skin health and elasticity.
Marine Collagen Nourish provides a blend of 18 amino acids.
Vitamin B3 (niacin) contributes to normal psychological function, normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, the maintenance of normal mucous membranes, the maintenance of normal skin and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Vitamin B7 (biotin) contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal macronutrient metabolism, normal psychological function, normal hair and skin and the maintenance of normal mucous membranes.
Vitamin C contributes to maintaining the normal function of the immune system. It also contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth, normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal psychological function, protection of cells from oxidative stress, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E and increases iron absorption.
Zinc contributes to normal DNA synthesis, normal acid-base metabolism, normal carbohydrate metabolism, normal cognitive function, normal fertility and reproduction, normal macronutrient metabolism, normal metabolism of fatty acids, normal metabolism of vitamin A, normal protein synthesis, the maintenance of normal bones, the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin, the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood, the maintenance of normal vision, the normal function of the immune system, the protection of cells from oxidative stress and it has a role in the process of cell division
